This is Part 1 of a 4-part series that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what a professional painter’s day actually looks like—through the lens of our team at Magnificent Painters. Over the next four posts, I’ll answer 12 thoughtfully chosen prompts that cover everything from early morning routines to jobsite challenges, and from technical details to our client care philosophy.

This isn’t just about paint—it’s about people, pride, process, and the discipline behind doing things right. Whether you're a homeowner thinking about hiring a painter or someone in the trades looking to build better habits, this series will give you a real look into our world.

1. The Morning Routine: Where It All Begins

My alarm goes off at 4:45 a.m. sharp. To most people, that might sound too early—but to me, it's necessary. I carve out this first hour entirely for myself—no phone, no distractions, no noise.I let my mind run wild—thinking about the day ahead, about ideas, plans, and sometimes nothing at all. I reflect on what I’ve built, where I’m headed, and what I’m grateful for. In that quiet space, creativity flows. It’s my time to connect inward before the outside world kicks in.

At 5:30 or 5:45, I make a cup of tea (never coffee for me), and only then do I check emails and messages. This balance between mindfulness and management gives me clarity and control as I step into the day.

2. The Start of the Workday: People First, Always

By 7:00 a.m., I’m usually at the job site. In the winter, we adjust to an 8:00 a.m. start due to daylight, but I try to begin early wherever possible.I used to think the company comes first, but I’ve learned something far more powerful:

“When you think about your people, your company grows. When you think about your customers, your business grows.

That’s why we begin each day with a 15–25 minute huddle. We walk the job site, go over the day’s goals, and check in with one another. We’re not just coworkers—we’re a team that cares how your night was or what’s on your mind. If it’s a new site, we break the job into phases and clarify what is and isn’t in the scope. For example, maybe the ceilings aren’t being touched because they’re popcorn, or the baseboards will wait until after the carpenters finish.

These conversations may seem small, but they’re crucial. Prep sets the tone, and the tone sets the outcome.

3. Prep Comes First: 70% Preparation, 30% Painting

You might think painting is all about what goes on the walls—but it’s what happens before the paint ever touches the surface that really matters.

At Magnificent Painters, we live by this:

“70% prep, 30% paint.”

Whether it’s sanding, patching, grinding, or filling—we don’t cut corners. Sometimes we patch a wall twice before it’s ready. It’s not about doing it fast—it’s about doing it right.

Before work begins, we ensure all tools and materials are on-site. If paint is missing, we can easily grab more. But if someone forgets a scraper or a sander? That throws off the whole rhythm. It pulls a team member out of their mental flow, disrupts productivity, and takes them out of that focused mindset they started with. That matters more than most people realize.

I also make sure to check in personally with each client. I explain the day’s scope, introduce the crew, and give a rough time estimate—“We’ll likely be done between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.” That small gesture builds trust and gives my team room to plan and perform at their best.

By the end of the day, cleanup is just as intentional. We organize, wrap up, and reset the job site so we can pick up right where we left off the next day.

Coming Up Next…

In Part 2, we’ll cover what makes our detail work different, how we handle on-site challenges, and what our breaks actually look like. Spoiler: it’s not always as relaxing as you'd think.

Thanks for reading—and if you’re someone who believes that quality matters, I think you’ll really enjoy this series.
